The CVIT is tasked with the duties of inspection/enforcement of commercial vehicles operated on the highways and streets within the City of Portland. Inspections of these vehicles include, but are not limited to, power units and or combination power unit and trailers with gross vehicle weight rating over 10,000 lbs, looking for mechanical and structural faults on the vehicles, examining log books and operator licensing, hazardous material paper work violations, weight/height/width violations, and sobriety/fitness checks of the commercial vehicle operators.
 
The CVIT has two full time Officers assigned to it, with a number of other officers from the Traffic Division that are either Level 1 or Level 2 certified to perform inspections of commercial vehicular traffic. The CVIT is funded entirely by Federal Funding.
